History The name Arłamów derives from the word "Arłaman" - vagrant, as originally the nomadian tribes of Walachians and Tartars settled it. Initially Arłamów was a royal property. Later it was owned by Herburt family and was incorporated into the so-called Dobromilski Key. In 1623, Aleksander Fredro defended himself against Cossacks. Since the Seventies the depopulated area was the property of the State Cabinet. The luxury holiday centre, which was established here, located around 30 km from Przemyśl and Ustrzyki Dolne, is situated on a hill, 590 m attitude. At the beginning, the centre was provided even with a special landing strip, what for years emphasized an exceptional character of the centre and its special importance. The forests of the Carpathian Primeval Forest abundant in various species of game and surrounding Arłamów, on several occasions witnessed legendary hunting events with participation of the highest authorities and foreign guests. However it became really famous for the internment of Lech Wałęsa since May 1982. The suite No 52 on the first floor occupied by him still raises interest among many people. Nowadays it is possible to see the historic suite and actually live in it. The apartment is also comfortable as it has two spacey rooms, an elegant sanitary facilities and a balcony with a great view. The two other suites are also interesting. The first, No 56, also situated on the first floor of the main building of Arłamów, is provided with two elegant rooms, two bathrooms and a living room with a tasteful cocktail cabinet, three colorful sofas and as many as two broad balconies. Piort Jaroszewicz (former Prime Minister of the communist Poland 1970-1980) used to relax in such conditions, but only a few people remember it nowadays. Almost similar suite No 76 on the second floor is associated with a stay of Edward Gierek (former First Secretary of PZPR (Polish Communist Part)). A bridge room furnished with original furniture from the pre-war living room of the Marshall Józef Piłsudski: stylish round table, eight comfortable armchairs and two sofas is drawing attention on the ground floor. Edward Gierek with Józef Broz-Tito (former communist Yugoslavian leader) met in the nearby "Myśliwska" conference room with oblong table, eleven leather arm-chairs and library bookcase. Also our prominent figures and numerous foreign guests also hunted in Arłamów. In 1976, the French President Valery Giscard d’Estaigne killed a beautiful stag. In the opinion of the forest inspector assistant of the Bircza State-Owned Forest District, Stanisław Rębisz, the killed stag was a Polish record-breaking stag when it comes to its look and antlers. It was given to the President of France. The following famous personalities hunted here: the President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito, Erich Honecker, the cousin of the Queen of England Elizabeth II, the brother of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Franz Joseph Strauss. The book of Wiesław Białkowski "Arłamów bez kurtyny" (Alarmów without curtain) approaches the unique values of the centre, its fascinating legend and many mysteries: "... For years the cap of invisibility precisely hid the two places in Poland marked with the cryptonyms W-1 and W-2. The initiated knew that Łańsk near Olsztyn and Arłamów in the Bieszczady Mountains were the holiday and hunting centres available for the closest governmental elite. The communist establishment entertained not only the leaders of the communist block countries, but also the presidents, prime ministers and royal figures of the West. It was there were they made politics, feasted and hunted even ... bears and wisents. During the martial law, Arłamów was selected for internment of the first chairman of the Solidarity Movement..." Despite the efflux and the transformations, the name Arłamów still sounds mysteriously for many. It is actually not surprising as until 1990 no generally available maps had this spot. This special weirdness assured full safety and peace to the state dignitaries and their special guests. After the fateful organisational changes, Arłamów gained its new image and additional attractions. |
